Most common reasons for Pedestrian Accidents?

Drivers who are not focused

Drivers who are texting or talking on their phones endanger not only pedestrians but also other motorists. Pedestrians who are engrossed in digital devices while crossing streets, on the other hand, are vulnerable to vehicle-pedestrian collisions. The bottom message is that you should not use digital devices when walking or driving in traffic.

Vehicle Defects (brakes, steering)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that about one-third of all passenger vehicle accidents are the result of defects in the vehicle. These defective vehicles can cause a wide range of damages, from disabling injuries to death.

Impaired Drivers

Drivers who drive while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs endanger everyone on the road, particularly pedestrians. Pedestrian accidents can occur when drunk drivers drive through crosswalks against the lights or make left turns right into a crowd of pedestrians. All pedestrians crossing the street at night should be aware of impaired drivers.

Recklessness

One of the most common causes of pedestrian accident is irresponsibility on the part of both drivers and pedestrians. Pedestrians can be endangered by drivers who do not look for pedestrians or who do not follow traffic laws at crosswalks.

Driver’s Inexperience

Improper training is one of the leading factors in accidents that happen while driving; this includes drivers who are inexperienced or lack proper skills for their vehicle type. These people often make mistakes because they don’t know any better, which could cause them to endanger other drivers on the road. Pedestrians should be aware of these risks when crossing streets because an inexperienced driver might not expect someone to cross at a particular intersection.

Poor Road Design and Construction

Lanes too narrow for traffic flow; sidewalks too small for pedestrians; no designated walkways between parking lots and buildings; intersections outfitted with stop lights instead of signs.

Bad Weather

A slick road may make it difficult or impossible for a car to stop in time to allow a pedestrian to pass and dangerous walking conditions may cause a pedestrian to tumble into the path of an unprepared motorist. Rainwater can also lead cars to hydroplane into crosswalks, while ice can cause them to jump the curb.

Construction of Highways

The hassles that come with road construction are well-known to many individuals. Many people are unaware that road construction can push pedestrians to stroll in places where vehicles are not expecting them.

How to avoid pedestrian accidents?

Walking Safety Tips
1. Be dependable. Follow all traffic laws and follow all signs and signals.
2. Walk on sidewalks whenever they are available.
3. Be alert on the road at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that divert your attention away from the road.
4. Cross streets at crosswalks or junctions whenever possible, where drivers expect pedestrians. Keep an eye out for vehicles coming from all directions, particularly those turning left or right.
5. If you can’t find a crosswalk or an intersection, look for a well-lit spot with a good view of traffic.

Driving Safety Tips
1. At all times, keep an eye out for pedestrians. It is everyone’s job to keep everyone safe.
2. When driving in difficult-to-see conditions, such as at night or in terrible weather, use additional caution.
3. When turning or otherwise entering a crosswalk, slow down and be ready to stop.
4. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and pull away from the crosswalk to allow other vehicles to notice the crossing pedestrians and come to a complete stop.
5. Passing vehicles stopped at a crosswalk is never a good idea. There may be persons crossing who are invisible to you.
6. Never drive when intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
7. Obey to the speed limit, especially if there are people on the road.
8. In school zones and in the neighborhood, drive at a slower speed.
